Angelina Jolie’s Breast Amputations: Not the only option

Increasing vitamin D3 & avoiding birth control drugs can also  block breast cancer

As folksinger Melissa Etheridge recently said when asked about actress Angelina Jolie’s decision to have both of her healthy breasts amputated, “I wouldn’t call it the brave choice. I actually think it’s the most fearful choice you can make when confronting anything with cancer.”

Etheridge, like Jolie, was born with a defective “cancer fix-it” gene. Unlike Jolie, however, Etheridge was actually diagnosed with breast cancer nine years ago. However, the singer, now cancer-free,  is among an increasing number of women who understand there are alternatives to the poison, burn and cut prevention options that traditional western medicine continues to offer women as their best choices when confronted with an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

“My belief is that cancer comes from inside you and so much of it has to do with the environment of your body,” Etheridge told a reporter last week.

Recent critical research finally tells us lots about why 240,000 women in the U.S. currently develop invasive breast cancer each year. This same research offers all women logical, healthy and inexpensive ways to stop most breast cancer before it can start.

  •  Increasing your vitamin D3 blood serum levels
  • Avoiding birth control and other progestin-based drugs

are two easy and  incredibly significant ways to actually block most breast cancer from taking root.

How does vitamin D3 stop breast cancer before it starts?

The DINOMIT theroy of breast cancer, developed by epidemiologist Cedric Garland, during three decades of research at the University of California, San Diego, shows how sufficient levels of vitamin D3 in the body enable breast cells to interlock with one another, forming a protective shield when a single breast cell becomes mutated. These interlocking cells block cancerous tumors from forming.

How or why can  all contraceptive drugs, including Yaz, Seasonale, and the Mirena IUD, along with  Prempro, (used by  post- menopausal women),  and progestin-based fertility drugs,  also cause breast cancer?

Ask Josef Penninger! This young Viennese geneticist, founder of the Institute of Molecular Biology of the Austrian Academy of Science, recently discovered that progestin can activate the protein RANKL in breast cells; RANKL can then mutate a cell and can exponentially increase cell duplication of a single breast cancer cell, causing breast tumors to form. This dramatic finding won Penninger a $7.4 million Innovators Award from the Department of Defense’s Breast Cancer Research Fund last fall.

But even today, most medical centers, along with our wealthiest breast cancer foundations, Susan G. Komen For the Cure, Avon Walk for Women, and the American Cancer Society, continue to warn women, “We really don’t know what causes breast cancer.”

Using their huge misinformation campaigns, these well-heeled breast cancer giants, financed largely by pharmaceutical and radiology companies, generate more fear, followed by more breast amputations, and more breast reconstructions each year.

Enter Angelina Jolie and the 100,000 other women in the U.S. who had one or both breasts amputated last year.  These individuals have usually been diagnosed with one of three conditions:

  • invasive breast cancer
  • some type of non cancerous breast condition
  • a positive test  for being born with  a mutated “cancer fix-it” gene…called BRCA 1 or BRCA 2

Sadly, oncologists, mammogram clinics and major cancer centers rarely talk to women about increasing their vitamin D3 blood serum level to 50-80 ng/ml, and avoiding any progestin-based drugs as options that can also stop the disease before it starts.  Why not?

  • Most physicians don’t follow the newest research on the protective effects of vitamin D3; nor do most doctors follow the new research that explains how progestin causes breast cancer. Stopping breast cancer before it starts, after all, is rarely their job.
  • Also, most physicians believe that the well-publicized “national” Vitamin D3 reports, conducted by the Institute of Medicine during the past few years, are valid. These doctors do not realize that the Institute’s study panels, which continue to find Vitamin D3 useless in preventing breast cancer, are designed and funded by pharmaceutical company interests.
  • Meanwhile, most physicians believe that contraceptive pills and patches and other progestin-based drugs do not   “significantly” increase breast cancer rates.  However, this statement, still published by pharmaceutical companies and the American Cancer Society, is contradicted by 97% of studies done on the subject in the past decade.
  • Also … and very sadly…most physicians say that their liability insurance may not cover their practice if they recommend increasing vitamin D3 and stopping progestin drugs, instead of advocating surgery, radiation (mammograms)  or pharmaceutical drugs as the best ways for a client to stop breast cancer before it starts.
  • Finally …most oncologists don’t make much money recommending more vitamin D3 supplements and increasing vitamin D3 by limited safe tanning, or by having a client stop using progestin drugs. Don’t forget…cancer specialists make a good portion of their annual income prescribing radiation, drugs and/or surgeries.

No wonder most women, including Jolie, remain fearful when they hear they are at high risk to develop breast cancer. Double breast amputations are even more likely if the woman’s health insurance will pay for these new perky breasts, with nipple-saving surgery that also offer a firm bra-free existence until the silicone or saline implants need to be  replaced  every ten years.

However, for more and more women, including Melissa Etheridge and myself,  avoiding progestin drugs, taking vitamin D3 supplements, getting more D3-producing UVB rays from safe (very limited)  indoor and outdoor tanning, and making other lifestyle and dietary changes, create a much gentler,  happier and better-informed wellness choice.

Breasts: A Natural and Unnatural History

Progestin: An Unnatural Hormone

Women of childbearing age in Colorado, Florida and Massachusetts,   now face the same invasive breast cancer rates that women of all ages faced in the 1960’s, according to  state cancer board data.

What is pushing up (pun noticed)  breast cancer among younger women in the U.S.?  One of the causes just might be  fake progesterone… called progestin, that lurks in  every birth control drug and in the popular Mirena IUD.

….with birth control drugs now commanding a $3.8 billion a year market in the U.S. alone, watch for lots of push back when this subject is  mentioned.

About Us

Thankfully, Dr. Susan Love  and her Army of Women,  is finally going to study the progestin- in- birth- control- drug situation. Are these drugs worth taking to prevent pregnancy. .. or is there a safer and more effective way?

In her  good natured and far-reaching book,  Breasts:a natural and unnatural history, science writer, Florence Williams,   introduces us to the lively  South African researcher,Malcolm Pike, who discovered back in 1983, that unnatural  progestin was as risky or more risky than unnatural estrogen when it came to popping hormone drugs and worrying about breast cancer.

Women should never forget, it was those unnatural progestins  in the combo hormone replacement therapy (HRT)  pill  that  older women were told to take, that pushed up their  their breast cancer risk by 26%.

It took a $625 million national study, let by a woman physician, Bernadine Healey, to finally convince the public in 2002, that HRT was a bad idea.

In one year,  this $4 billion a year U.S. HRT drug market collapsed in half and for a few short years, post menopausal women  saw their hormone-positive breast cancer rates dive by 15%.

Now lots of research is  again pointing to unnatural progestins as a significant  culprit ,  as more and more  women of childbearing age,  using all  types of  hormonal birth control, reach a tipping point,  and end up with invasive breast cancer.

We need to thank Malcoln Pike, Bernadine Healey, Susan Love,  and now Florence Williams,  for their past, recent and future research and  writing  that encourages women to question this problematic and unnatural hormone.

Coming Up:  War on Women

Hormone-free IUDs are  safer and more effective than any hormone drug or hormone IUD.

But why does this IUD cost $1, 000 in the U.S. and $1.00 in the U.K.?

U.S. women, under 45, slammed with high breast cancer rates; are fertility drugs involved?

U.S.women, under 45 years old,  have  experienced a 12 percent annual increase in invasive breast cancer since 2007.

Busting Breast Cancer recently uncovered this epidemic-like trend using state-based data collected by the North American Association of National Cancer Registries and published bi-annually by the American Cancer Society.

Many women already know that breast cancer has become a younger woman’s disease, but few understand some of the most probable causes or risk factors behind this startlingly trend.

Contraceptive drug use in the U.S. has grown rapidly since 1997, with over 13 million teens and women under 50, now using some type of hormone contraceptive drug. In addition,  85,000 women in the U.S. used fertility drugs last year, an all time high.  Market researchers estimate six million or more U.S. women will have used one or more fertility drug by 2025.

Increasing numbers of international studies show that the chemical estrogens and chemical progestins in these drugs increase cell proliferation and other risky conditions with regard to breast cancer.

How many younger women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer since 2007 were using hormone contraceptive drugs or had recently used some type of hormone fertility drugs? No government agency tracks this data.

We also know that increasing profits are being made each year,  as more  women use these chemical hormones.  The U.S. contraceptive drug market is currently worth $3.8 billion;  U.S. fertility clinics enjoy another $4.4 billion each year.

A lone voice at the National Cancer Institute recently recommended the federal government spend serious dollars studying which fertility drugs might be increasing invasive breast cancer rates. Is it the synthetic estrogens in some of the IVF (in vitro fertilization) drugs? Is it the progestin drugs, such as Elizabeth Edwards used,  to carry her youngest two children to full term?

Additional studies are needed to clarify the effects on cancer risk of fertility drugs, especially those used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization, said Louise Brinton, Chief of the Hormonal and Reproductive Epidemiology Branch at NCI, co-author of an article on fertility drugs and breast cancer, to be published in June in Seminars in Reproductive Medicine.

Have you been diagnosed with invasive breast cancer after using fertility drugs? Please send us your story.

Are you an oncology nurse, who is noticing more and more patients have used fertility drugs? Please send us your story.

Let’s share our knowledge. Let’s support Louise Brinton as she advocates for a national study on fertility drugs and invasive breast cancer. We must find every possible way to reverse this epidemic-like trend of invasive breast cancer in our younger women.

Dr. Mercola Urges Increases in Vitamin D3 Levels

The Truth About Breast Cancer is ecstatic to learn that a leading holistic MD, Dr. Joseph Mercola, has now joined KnowBreastCancer in urging all women to increase their Vitamin D3 levels ASAP!

Dr. Mercola, with the most popular natural health website on the internet, www.mercola.com, agrees with Dr. Cedric Garland’s DINOMIT Theory of cancer as the fastest way we can turn breast cancer into a rare disease.

If women can get their Vitamin D3 blood levels up to a level of 60-80 ng/ml, mastectomies and reconstruction surgeries may soon become history!

Currently, the American Cancer Society, the Institute of Medicine, and national pink ribbon groups don’t talk to women about this inexpensive and effective option as a way to stop breast cancer before it can start. Unfortunately, their focus is  usually limited to finding a cure; with much of these non-profits’ budgets supplied  by big pharma and radiology companies that give millions of dollars in donations each year to these for- the- cure groups.

Another helpful site that encourages women to use enough  vitamin D3 supplements every day to reach 60 ng/ml – 80-ng/ml, to help stop breast cancer before it can start is Grassroots Health, a national public health  organization www.grassrootshealth.net.

American Cancer Society Report is Misleading; younger women getting more triple negative, estrogen positive & HER2+ breast cancers

Women of childbearing age, in many states around the U.S. today, face historically high invasive breast cancer levels. The American Cancer Society’s (ACS’) recent study, published Feb 22, in the American Association for Cancer Research, is incorrect when it says breast cancer rates are not changing for younger women.

In Massachusetts, younger women (under 50), saw a 45% increase in invasive breast cancer between 1995-2007; younger women in Colorado saw a 27% increase between 1990-2008, and younger women in Florida saw a 40% increase between 1984-2008.

The American Cancer Society’s February, 2011 report doesn’t count the actual number of women diagnosed in each state; instead, it uses an estimate, based on a formula, based on 9% of the U.S. population.

To know the real story, we need to count every woman who is affected, and we need to have those numbers published for all of us to see and understand.

Contact you state cancer board and ask them how many younger women developed invasive breast cancers last year, compared to the past five or ten years. Also ask them, how many of these younger women were diagnosed with triple negative, HER2+ and estrogen receptor positive breast cancers.

We need this specific information, not estimates. Keeping women in the dark when it comes to these critical numbers, makes it impossible to measure any positive changes, as women try easy and healthy ways to stop breast cancer before it starts.

U. S. Breast Cancer Epidemic Hitting Young Moms and Other Women of Childbearing Age

In   2009, about 62,520 women of childbearing age in the United States were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.  This is a whopping 41% increase from 2001, when approximately 44, 300 women of childbearing age were reportedly diagnosed with the disease, according to recent American Cancer Society statistics.

These younger American women are being hit with triple negative, HER2 positive and estrogen positive breast cancers; diseases  that usually maim, sometimes kill and often bankrupt a woman’s current and future financial situation.

In recent years young media leaders and celebrities have shared their personal breast cancer diagnoses, including Fox News political reporter Jennifer Griffin (triple negative); ABC’s Good Morning America host,  Robin Roberts (triple negative); National Public Radio’s Tavis Smiley Show Executive Producer,  Sheryl Flowers, who died from triple negative breast cancer in 2009 at the age of 42, folksinger Melissa Ethridge (HER2 positive) and film star, Christina Applegate.

Why is this new epidemic happening to our younger women? How can younger women help stop breast cancer from happening to them ever… or never again?

Disagreeing with Teresa Heinz Kerry over mammograms for all

Dec 23, 2009

The number of women in the United States  newly diagnosed with invasive breast cancer is rising by 1% each year. It is with sadness therefore,  that I learned today that Teresa Heinz Kerry is now a part of that statistic.

Mrs. Heinz has been a long-standing  advocate for research that better understands environmental and lifestyle causes of breast cancer. Teresa Heinz, as an action-oriented philanthropist and policy maker,  is clearly a dear friend to all breast cancer prevention proponents.

But mammograms do not prevent breast cancer; so I reluctantly must disagree with Mrs. Heinz when she limits her remarks to say that  all women, no matter what their risk levels, should have an annual mammogram at age 40 and older.

This one and only one- size- fits- all recommendation seems inappropriate, given recent research and experience   on how  high vitamin D levels can  stop breast cancer from happening,  as well as  other known  breast cancer risk factors, not to mention  the well documented limits and sometimes dangers of annual screening mammograms.

To truly protect ourselves  from developing breast cancer,  all women,  young and old,  need to  follow a real prevention lifestyle.. not just go running to get a mammogram!

For example:

  • If you are past 40 have you found alternatives to contraceptive drugs or hormone replacement drugs ?
  • Have you had a vitamin D3 blood test yet? Are you taking enough vitamin D3 supplements every day to keep your blood serum levels at  60 ng/ml?
  • Are you filtering the water that you drink and shower with every day?
  • Are you able to  limit your alcohol intake to  three glasses of wine or beer a week?

Research shows that no one habit or drug is  going to cause breast cancer; instead breast cancer seems to happen when a mixture of such individualized risk factors comes together into a personalized toxic cocktail.

Each of us needs to understand this range of factors as we work to keep our own breast cancer risk level low.

Focusing only on getting an annual mammogram, instead of  also encouraging women to seriously follow a real prevention lifestyle, will never lower the number of women who develop breast cancer.

To understand how you can put together your own  real prevention lifestyle, see Know Breast Cancer’s 7 Easy Ways at www.knowbreastcancer.net

Wishing you  peace and good health in your home, your community  and across our world this holiday season,

Susan
